The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into starters, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman chefs used many herbs, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and dill. Later on, there were some books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menues of the nobility of the time. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cooking, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an increase in recipe publications, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are greatly in demand mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
