The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, fennel and dill. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
