The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of recipes way back into distant history, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He describes how the meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs made use of many different spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example bay, fennel and asafoetida. For the next few years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Nestle Crunch recipe.
