The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times used many aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise for example bay, rue and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted an explosion in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
