The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these early cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as bay, fennel and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
