The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later, there are two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food cooked for the wealthy. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are starting to become popular due to better eduction, people having more spare time and having more disposable income. |
