The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existence of recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, there were a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of those days. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
