The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the Roman chefs used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today like bay, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an eruption in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private collections. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
