The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, certainly as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, there were a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the spicy food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days. For the centuries that followed, the upper classes tried to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
