The History of Recipes

Written recipes as an idea can be found way back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful.

During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the cooks of his times used a wide range of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise for example basil, mint and dill.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some recipe books which date from the 14th Century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these have no connection with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menues of the rich and powerful of that period.

Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices prompted an outbreak in books on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries.

The arrival of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site.
