The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into history, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are some books from the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the wealthy. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. When we get to the 1900s, recipe books are greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
