The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Later, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the rich and powerful of that time. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an increase in publications on food, the majority of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
