The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early records were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like bay, rue and dill. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
