The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, we have a couple of interesting books dating from the 1300s ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of that period. During the next few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
