The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius describes how the Romans made use of many spices, including some familiar names such as bay, mint and asafoetida. Later on, we find two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are not about the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of that time. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an increase in manuscripts on cooking, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookbooks are increasing in popularity due to better eduction, people having more spare time and being a little richer. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
