1/4 oz dark creme de cacao
1/4 oz creme yvette
1/4 oz brandy
1/4 oz sweet cream
Directions
Pour ingredients slowly, in order given, into a pony or pousse-cafe
glass, being careful not to let ingredients mix. This produces a
multi-colored "striped" effect of the liquors. For best results pour
each ingredient slowly over a teaspoon held bottom-side up over the
glass. You can achieve the same effect by inserting a glass stirring
rod into the glass and then slowly pouring each ingredient down the
rod.

The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, old recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he tells us how the Romans used many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, rue and parsley. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe books are in great demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
