The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, sadly, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef tells us how the chefs of Roman times used many herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the East, such as basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to an explosion in recipe books, the majority of which are now in private collections. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
