The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Moving on, there were some recipe books dating from the 14th Century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are not about the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of the period. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted an increase in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private collections. During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
