The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed back into distant history, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two interesting books dating from the 14th Century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the indian curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe books were in high demand, due to better eduction, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
