The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were a couple of books which date from the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the nobility of the period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
