The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Moving on, there were some recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of that period. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
