The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, we find two books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that time. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices caused an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
