The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, these, early recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today such as bay, mint and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an increase in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in academic collections. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Crisp Ala Brigitte recipe.
