The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions way back into antiquity, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, these, early records were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient chefs made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names like basil, mint and asafoetida. During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Apple Crumble recipe.
