The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Moving on, we find a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and powerful. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks are in great demand, mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
