The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman cooks used many different aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, rue and dill. During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
