The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient cooks used many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the holy lands, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices caused an eruption in recipe publications, some of which are now in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
