The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. As we move on, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the 1300s ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the wealthy. During the next few centuries, the families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
