The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed back into distant history, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like basil, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the East, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to an explosion in recipe publications, some of which are now in private cookery archives. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Apricot Balls recipe.
