The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Au Gratin Potatoes recipe.
