The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, generally, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the Roman chefs made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, rue and dill.

Closer to modern times, there were a couple of interesting cookery books from the fourteenth century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of the period.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from the East, including coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a surge in publications on food, most of which are now in private libraries.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery books are increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
