The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked far back into antiquity, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the upper classes of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to an increase in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Aunt Gin's Vegetable Soup recipe.
