The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes back into the far past, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into starters, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the cooks of his times made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like bay, mint and asafoetida. For the centuries that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
