The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into the far past, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something we still use today. He also recounts how the ancient chefs used a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, mint and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
