The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful.

Moving on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are not about the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of the period.

Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an increase in recipe manuscripts, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

During the following few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

By the advent of the 1900s, cook books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
