The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Closer to modern times, we have two books dating from the 14th Century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals cooked for the rich people of the time.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an outbreak in books on cookery, many of which are now in private cookery archives.

During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and having more money.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site.
