The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into the far past, in truth as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these ancient records were just basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and dill. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
