The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into the far past, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, mostly, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, we have two recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of that time. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy lands, including basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes led to an increase in books on cooking, most of which still exist in private libraries. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more money. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
