The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, there were two recipe books from the fourteenth century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of the period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery publications were highly popular due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
