The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, we find a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 14th Century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are not about the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the nobility of the time. For the next few years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
