The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into history, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the Roman chefs made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to a torrent in books on cooking, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the advent of the 1900s, cook books were in great demand, due to increased literacy, more leisure time and being a little richer. |
