The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be found way back into distant history, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two recipe books which date from the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of that period. When we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications were in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having increased free time and having more money to spend. |
