The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the ancient cooks used many spices and herbs, including a few you will know like bay, mint and asafoetida. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Baked Rice Pudding recipe.
