The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be traced way back into the far past, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the ancient Romans made use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, fennel and parsley. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The TV revolution brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
