The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, there are a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes of those days. For the decades that followed, the powerful families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe books are in high demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
