The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like thyme, fennel and parsley. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper classes strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
