The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of cookery books which date from the 14th Century - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these have no connection with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food eaten by the rich and wealthy people of that time. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking publications were highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
