The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced far back into the far past, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he tells us how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, rue and dill. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find two interesting recipe books dating from the 14th Century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the nobility of the time. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to a surge in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
