The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of `recipes` back into history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of Roman times used many different spices, including some that we all recognise like bay, rue and parsley. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications are greatly in demand as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. |
