The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of recipe books dating from the 14th Century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food served to the rich and wealthy people of that time. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an explosion in recipe publications, many of which are now in academic collections. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
