The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of meal recipes far back into history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. As we move on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books from the 1300s : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the nobility of the time. During the next few centuries, the powerful and rich tried to serve the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 20th century, cookbooks were increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, more spare time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Banana Republic recipe.
