The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, fennel and parsley. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
