The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, we find a couple of interesting recipe books from the fourteenth century - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are not about the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of that period. For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of the West strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
