Directions
1 c ice cubes
1/2 c skim milk
1/2 very ripe banana
1/2 c whole strawberries
3 TB instant nonfat dry milk
: few drops vanilla extract
In blender, mix together ice cubes, skim milk, banana, strawberries,
nonfat dry milk and extract. Blend on high speed until ice is crushed
and mixture is slushy and serve immediately.

The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find a couple of interesting books which date from the 14th Century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food served to the rich and wealthy people of the period. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookbooks are in great demand, mostly due to higher levels of literacy, more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
