The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are a few tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Later on, we find a couple of books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including basil and coriander. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are now in private collections. For the next few years, the powerful and rich strove to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
