The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, in the main part, these early records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
During Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, rue and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices was responsible for an explosion in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
