The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into distant history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef tells us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, rue and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an eruption in manuscripts on food, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are in high demand, mostly due to better eduction, more spare time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
