The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `wonderful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example basil, rue and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an eruption in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
