The History of Recipes

We are able to read the history of written recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Closer to modern times, we have two recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of the time.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for an explosion in recipe publications, many of which are now in private collections.

During the next few hundred years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking publications are highly popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site.
