The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. As we move on, there are two interesting recipe books which were published in the 1300s - a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of food cooked for the nobility of that period. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of the West tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more spare time and being a little richer. |
